This is exactly how I feel about circumcision in the US. Like, there’s a whole bunch of issues around how and why we do it so often but anyone speaking publicly about it is invariably creepy and horrifying.
"creepy and horrifying." this is their deep, dark secret USAians don't want to go near. hence the paranoid response when someone touches it.
