Some philosophers will say that an unexamined life is not worth living, but what good is a life where all you do is examine it and only live in your head? Most of us are either stuck in the past or are fantasizing about the future; rarely do we live in the now.

In the "now" you have everything you need; there is nothing you need that is not there in that moment. The things you THINK you are lacking you will notice are connected to a desire to fix the past or future, again, neither exist in reality now.

That is not to say it is useless to think of the past or the future; our ability to "time travel" with our minds to either place is useful to help act in the NOW. The problem is we emotionally attach ourselves to those thoughts as if we were IN those times rather than now.

If you were to stop all thoughts of the past and future, and simply focus on the current moment; not thinking about bills, or politics, or anything bothersome, you will realize the infinite moment. But even such a moment soon passes on to the next one. Soon suffering will come.

You see, the people who sell the "Zen stuff" forget to tell you that there will be times where the moment IS suffering; such as phyiscal suffering or emotional suffering that is due to something in the current moment (loss of family for example). There is no total removal of it.

The goal of focusing on the "now" is to remove all UNNECESSARY suffering; the thoughts you keep rehashing because you RESIST what is, and WISH things were otherwise. This is needless suffering, that which you bring upon yourself with your creative mind: delusional desire.
