One of our Year 13 mathematicians wrote this lovely puzzle. It definitely challenged the rest of the class! How would you solve it?

A square with lines of length 3, 1 and 2 from consecutive corners meeting at a point inside the square. Text alonside reads "What is the area of the square? (and what are my 2 favourite prime numbers?)"

The angles problem is from my favourite ever puzzle book, Geometry Snacks by and . And the whole chains of reasoning idea is heavily influenced by and the Mathematical Thinking project that your local Maths Hub is almost certainly running.

The squares puzzle is one that I think I first saw in a tweet from . added it to our SOW last year (he says he heard it from ) and modelled it to us in a dept meeting - so lots of the ideas about presenting it are really his!

I should probably add that neither of the puzzles I used, and very few of the ideas I talked about, are my own. Like all teachers I’m great at nicking stuff from all kinds of places 😁

Here’s the video of last night’s webinar. If you’ve wondered how to use puzzles as the basis for classroom activities this might give you some ideas. Thank you to everyone who came to play - I had so much fun!

Many thanks again for such a brilliant session yesterday. I took your advice and added a circle to the second problem. What a beautiful proof without words!

This time tomorrow I’m going to attempt to show how I use a couple of geometry puzzles with Year 7s. Lots of visualising, not too much algebra. Come and join in!

Ok, I have a confession: when asked me to check the final proofs for my pages, I got access to a folder of everyone’s contributions. So naturally, I’ve sneaked several big peeks… and there is some AMAZING stuff in this book.
