The internal monologue thing is a great topic to push because it's a nontrivial "essentialist" difference in a valued domain, very counter to what mainstream sentiment wishes.

nearly omnipresent, exception is rapid feedback intense concentration work, that is, certain vidya, sports, heavy calculation, etc, tactical stuff.

I basically use it like commenting, or eating utensils, being properly groomed, etc. It's a formatting thing, that happens in conjunction with other processes.

by the way, your brain adapts its functioning to metabolic demands, and I think that's why walking is conducive to thinking for a lot of people. Downregulates mental activity a little while priming it for simultaneous attention and providing it with some gratuitous stimulation.
