Gave a talk last night (thanks ). Quick summary: 1) The current mass torture of billions farm animals is unconscionable and future generations will wonder how we let this happen. (1/8)

Am I the only one who finds it weird that every car commercial is about something other than the car? Commercial could be about jet skiing in the Caribbean and then be like "the all-new Toyota Camry"

Not sure if I’ve been living under a rock, but apparently there’s been a massive opt-out movement for state tests in schools where I grew up (Long Island) brewing for years now. 43% of students opted out of last year, down from a peak of 50% in 2017.

Anecdotally, I’ve found that everyone thinks they are being contrarian when they say “actually I think Trump is going to win re-election” To the point where it’s actually contrarian to think a Democrat will win

Didn’t realize: 1) 5-15% of the world population gets the flu each year (250-690k deaths) 2) 2009 Swine Flu really did spread widely (10-200m), but wasn’t particularly deadly so we forgot about it 3) Spanish Flu was so bad because of mortality, not infectiousnesss

A more practical take on improving productivity by He doesn't mention it, but I think some way of auto deleting browser tabs you've had open for too long would be liberating as well

The best way to take down your competitor is to get their office a cute dog. It will instantly kill their productivity, though they also may be happier...

All the talk of quarantines reminds me of when I learned about their origin in Europe when visiting Dubrovnik. “all merchants, sailors, and goods arriving from "suspicious lands" could not enter the city if they haven't spent a month in a quarantines”

It was a bad idea to start reading this subreddit about the coronavirus 😬

Thinking about this and progress in the world of atoms. - Material science: we’re slowly outlawing plastic - Healthcare: costs rise exponentially for linear or flat output. Eroom’s law keeps going, it now costs $3B to introduce a new drug to the market

1/ Thank you to for sharing this with me. The concept of "enmeshment" resonates so much w/ me both for founders and investors. Enmeshment is when boundaries between 2 people, or perhaps a person and job, become blurred. Loss of identity.

I just watched Call Me By Your Name and all I can think about is: The villa from the movie (15,000 sq feet, built in 1500s) is the same price as a nice two bedroom apartment in downtown manhattan ($2.1m) NYC is crazy

I searched a company on Google and got ads for four other companies before seeing the actual company I was searching for. Zoomed out for the pic but you have to scroll to actually see the result want. Pretty crazy

Also many people tend to discount results from small countries (Norway, Sweden, Singapore), rightly or wrongly

Interesting question by on why China is seen as a success when it’s more capitalist counterpart Taiwan is far richer. My guess is: 1) Slope vs y intercept (“Taiwan Miracle” was long time ago) 2) Prominence of Chinese firms/news about China given it’s 60x larger

As someone who never studied comp sci., reading about this in Algorithms to Live By was super eye opening. It really does govern many of your day to day decisions, as well as major life ones. Highly recommend the book

The Industrial Revolution reduced slavery's necessity enough for abolition. The lab-meat revolution will do the same for animal slaughter. Where ethics alone failed, easy access to lab-grown KFC will give us the moral courage to view factory farming as the nightmarish evil it is.

We need to shake our societal notion that buying a house should be a no brainer/great investment.

I’m convinced that the interests of our county are largely the opposite of those of the real estate industry. It’s hard to see a future in which we reverse this chart and real estate as an asset class does not get decimated with negative real returns for many years

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately: How traditions, even ones which may seem silly, provide useful guidance in our lives. Great essay touching on this subject: h/t 's great "Friday Finds"
