Two things I know for sure are going to happen in the coming days/weeks as the "incel" phenomenon gains widespread notoriety: 1) people will mock and insult 'incels' 2) that will make things a lot worse

I want to be clear as I start this thread that I am NOT (NOT! NOT! NOT! NOT!) saying that people should be more sympathetic to the poor beleaguered incels. Incels are awful people who have embraced a toxic ideology. The don't deserve your sympathy, and will use it against you.

But a core part of "incel" ideation is that they are outcasts, and looked down on by society, because they are low-value 'beta males' who have no value. To be an incel is to believe yourself to be a victim of undue scorn because of unalterable characteristics.

Mocking incels as being losers, babies, basement-dwellers, neckbeards, and rejects doesn't have any effect on them because THEY ALREADY KNOW YOU SEE THEM THAT WAY. That is, in fact, their organizing principle.

Holding them up for ridicule only serves to deepen their belief that the world is against them, and that 'normies' see them as worthless. It deepens their hatred and sense of isolation and persecution.

For the vast majority of "incels", I suspect that their self-loathing and arrogance (a weird combo, to be sure) is a better explanation for their social isolation than "Stacys only want to fuck Chads", but extremist ideologies aren't concerned with finding empirical truth, so...

But that's also why extending sympathy isn't the right approach either. They will, in my experience, see it either as pity (which feeds their narrative) or acceptance of their beliefs (which feeds their self-righteousness).

The only thing that's ever worked for me is to attack the pillars of their belief system relentlessly. It's based on some pretty simple and disprovable axioms, rooted in gender essentialism and stereotypes.

Mock their beliefs. Not the people who hold them. They think they are in possession of Deep Important Truths(tm). They do NOT like it when those Truths are revealed to be vapid, or when they are treated as the childish nonsense they are.

But if (/when) the narrative becomes about how incels are losers who can't get laid, it will only serve to confirm their belief that masculinity is about domination and sexual conquest, and that society looks down on men who can't achieve those things.

I would also, just as a matter of tactics, suggest that you never allow yourself to be drawn in to a 'debate' with an "incel". They've put more time than you can fathom into confirming their beliefs. Talking ABOUT them is fine. Talking TO them is a monumental waste of time.

I also this this piece by @DrNerdLove is essential reading to understand the specific pain and fear that drives "incels" and a lot of men who are sympathetic to their arguments:http://www.doctornerdlove.com/fear-of-being-invisible/ …

The one exception I would make is that if you are a non-incel straight male who is for some reason important to an incel—remember you are quite possibly the only person he will listen to. So get brave and talk.

The ones I’ve known, mostly students, were surprisingly open to hearing that it was their goddam stoopid ideas that were ruining their lives, not a conspiracy of attractive women. But I would bet those guys were self selected by their own desire to escape.

I think that the biggest takeaway for the general public should not be what to do about them as individuals, but to realize they’re not “mentally ill lone wolves” - they are a semi-organized group espousing a dangerous radical ideology

I think that in dealing with individuals you should always treat everyone with respect and dignity but also have zero tolerance for bullshit. (Sometimes you’ve got to punch a Nazi)
