Hop off about 6 minutes later, and uh... acquire? A Wagon? (I hop into the back and the driver just leaves. No crimes)

Continue off into some swampland, punching some confederate-looking lad on the way. Eventually, after much muck-diving and turtle-watching, I find a lonely man at a campfire with his horse

Now, man's got a lot to say. Welcomes me to sit - that's important - and chats about some old plantation gold he's been hunting.

he finishes his tale, and I welcome him on his way. He gets about fifteen feet away before I have the NERVE to sit down at the fire

I hear some irritable muttering - who knows! maybe this is an emergent interaction with an animal or stranger.

Sad to hear this is still a thing in RDR2. I figured with all the fancy new context menu dialogue stuff they were moving away from their usual hyper aggressive npcs and interactions with other people basically boiling down to "how long until they try to attack me"

I'm guessing the npc "owned" the campsite or something, and using owned items is similar to like... sleeping in an owned bed or something? Haven't played it myself so haven't really been able to dig into that. But npcs seem to be pretty territorial in RDR2.

Either way it's a dumb outcome and something that shouldn't escalate so quickly. Even if the dude really liked his campfire all to himself.
