This is an extremely out of touch decision by
@TeamYouTube. It SHOULD be EASY to know when you’ve found the OFFICIAL YouTube channel of a creator! So why, WHY, why the heck would you make it HARDER for channels to verify themselves? How does this help the viewer? What the heck?https://twitter.com/TeamYouTube/status/1174735005215420416 …Marriland added,

"Is this a popular channel that has a very similar name to many other channels?" So...accounts that are parodied or anything similar will be affected by this. Yeah, no. Lucky me for knowing I'd never be verified, before the change, because I'm trash. XD

Kindve the mindset I’m sitting on with all this lol I’m not good enough to get verified so it doesn’t bother me as much as it ought to.

As a viewer you should still be bothered by it. It’s going to make it harder to distinguish the original sources and real content creators when searching for videos. It can be a helpful indicator that a channel is authentic while searching for stuff to watch.

All you have to do is look at the name. OH NO! READING! D: Seriously, though? All Verification does is show YouTube respects you as a creator on the platform. This is mostly more a middle finger to a lot of the older faces who formed the platform and stuck with it than anything.

No, names on YouTube do not have to be unique. They're not usernames anymore. If a scammer changes their name to a popular (but not verified) YouTuber, uploads a copy of their video, and viewbots it, it will be indistinguishable in search results. Verified status helped that.

Actual legitimate question: Would someone be able to make their channel name the exact same as someone else's? I've only seen that happen after a channel gets deleted and the owner of said channel is being persistent.

Also, last time I checked, YouTube channel names were still tied to Google+, so...yeah. I might be misinformed, but...seriously?
