Implementing travel bans when it was clear they’d do little to slow spread was unwise, but it gave the appearance of doing *something*. Keeping the travel bans long after it’s clear they’re useless is punitive and sets horrible precedent for future pandemic response. Sigh. End.

We haven’t had a travel ban since the first wave.

I disagree the travel ban made sense 2 weeks ago and you could argue it slowed the spread. But there is zero reason for it to still be in effect. The cat is now out of the bag.

Travel bans seem primarily political. Many (most?) of the experts I follow (ID docs, epidemiologists, etc) think they are ineffective. More pandemic theatre.

We still take our shoes off in the airport. 20 years later

I flew recently. I had a piece of plastic in my pocket when I went through the metal detector. I had to go through again & make sure to empty my pockets - it found the plastic. Imagine if we didn’t take off our shoes, how many ppl would have to have their shoes scanned anyway?

Only objection is: S. Africa may not be testing so much, in proportion to the population… per capita cases is the only way to compare…
