You are taking the quote out of context. It actually says: "Given that we are a country where there is not really an imminent threat of coronavirus, I just don’t see how the risk of the vaccine outweighs, or is better than, suspending right now.”
In the context of suspending for a week to investigate the findings further. Eg the context is: we have time to stop and make a conscious decision with available research. Sounds like a typical politicians slagging match here.
