1/n. It's time again to take a bit of a step back from this platform for a little while and go 'broadcast-only'. The past week or so (reactions to our own research, and the Allyn Walker case) makes it clear that Twitter isn't the place to discuss sexuality research in a sane way.

3/n. However, I will be engaging in professional networks, so find me on LinkedIn to connect. I'll also be writing more on a new substack page where the type of nuance needed to discuss difficult topics isn't lost due to character limits. Subscribe below!

2/n. The frustrating thing is that early career scholars doing cutting-edge work in this area simply don't have the job / life security to become the next Allyn Walker. We have families to feed and mortgages to pay. I'll continue to share research but my engagement will be less.

I'm receiving messages telling me that Walker advocated for the use of 'child porn'. This is not something that was mentioned in the interview at all (which is telling...). This was mentioned in their thesis, and a point that I disagree with.

Shouldn't go unsaid that the loudest voices on the importance of academic freedom have not defended this researcher, who has done nothing but communicate their findings. In fact, some of those founding (what at face value looks like) a bogus university have joined the bandwagon.

I agree. Those who don’t break the law but seek to understand why others do & how they might be stop or manage shouldn’t be personally attacked. We can agree to differ but when debate is stifled by threats we all lose.

The treatment of , on this platform, on campus, and in the media, for doing nothing more than talking in relatively broad terms about a burgeoning research field, is nothing short of disgraceful.

A university should be a true Safe Space: not safe FROM dangerous ideas but safe FOR free discussion of them.

Imagine how embarrassing it would be to have hosted this guy on your massive-audience podcast, spreading the idea that ivermectin was a dead-cert COVID preventer and could end the pandemic. Wait, you’re telling me those people have shown no embarrassment/shame whatsoever?! 😯

The recent stormy discussion about the role and manner of criticism in research reveals a challenging underlying tension in the reform movement. There are risks and benefits of treating "open science" as a social identity, and the discussion mostly revealed the risks.

This is a fantastic approach to paper critique, and highlights how respectful and rigorous open science discussions can happen on this platform.

Can’t wait to read this important paper! Fully agree that we need to work more with young to better understand, and ultimately prevent, in the UK

All of these can be true: 1) Political conservatives are underrepresented at US universities 2) Universities are small-c conservative institutions 3) A wide range of intellectual positions are represented at universities 4) That range no longer maps onto the space of US politics

Okay, jumping on the Thoughts About University Of Austin™️ train. Short 🧵putting the obvious mocking aside to think about in the historic context of institutional development in the USA. 1/

‘Compared to the six months before training, victim engagement improved 32% in the post-training period. Written reports by officers also improved, with increased victim-supportive language and improved focus on victim services’.

I gotta be honest. A university devoted to truth sounds wonderful. But please please please put scientific truth at the Apex, and hire some decent scientists, not just anti-vaxxers.
