The antilynching bill was first unanimously passed by Senate as Justice for Victims of Lynching Act last February. House amended and passed the bill as Emmett Till Antilynching Act today 410-4. Revised bill now heads back to Senate for a final vote before sending it onto the WH.

Massie on voting against anti-lynching bill: "This bill expands current federal 'hate crime' laws. A crime is a crime, and all victims deserve equal justice. Adding enhanced penalties for 'hate' tends to endanger other liberties such as freedom of speech."https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/politics/2020/02/26/kentucky-rep-thomas-massie-opposes-emmett-till-anti-lynching-act/4883740002/ …

#HR35 bans activities that are already illegal under federal law, and it’s based on the unconstitutional federalization of criminal punishment, which is a threat to civil liberties and civil rights—particularly for people of color.

Lynching is one of the most heinous forms of murder and absolutely deserves to be treated as a capital crime. Today's vote contained diluted language that does not provide a proper avenue for punishment. Read my full statement on my H.R. 35 vote here: http://ow.ly/oGoW50yx3Xh  pic.twitter.com/gDnt98VJPP

What was attached to the bill that would make someone vote NO to an anti lynching bill?

Did they happen to provide reasoning for opposing this? I'm very curious.

Lynching is already a crime. This is about designating it a hate crime, a designation that Amash believe is unconstitutional. https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/761251052066746373 …
