    11) YouTube has been a secret weapon for podcast SEO and discovery. YouTube + Google extends the average podcast half-life because most podcast app recommendations aren't good.

    10) Rogan started streaming on YouTube in the early days and has produced an incredible amount of content. This matters because the YouTube algorithm can feed you his videos endlessly. So can Google.

    8) Related to Rogan and his show's growth is YouTube. YouTube's scale is massively underestimated.

    6) These podcasters aren't earning much on advertising and aren't selling tickets like Joe Rogan, so they're cheap to buy.

    5) Now, Spotify recognizes that Gimlet can consistently find/acquire the hosts that create these popular shows. With a budget much smaller than Netflix's for original content it's conceivable Gimlet can lock in a ton of great podcasters on exclusive deals.

    4) Because relatively few podcasts are on those ad networks it creates a chicken/egg problem where a lot of great shows start but fail to really earn soon enough and the hosts stop. iTunes is a podcast graveyard.

    3) For independent podcasters who just rely on advertising it's a grind and not particularly lucrative normally. That's why we saw things like Midroll and All Things Comedy happen a while back to line up deals for groups of podcasters.

    2) Today the best solution for monetization is advertising and also selling a product (e.g. stand-up tickets). Patronage is still pretty fringe.
