One fascinating data point from 2016 is the share of the vote that went to candidates other than Clinton or Sanders. This was most common in southern & Appalachian states with closed primaries - forcing conservative dems to cast protest votes. West Virginia topped this with 13%.

(I may die tmrw, but John Kerry outperformed the fundamentals in 04. That's just a fact, and it'll be true long after I drop dead from a fried chicken induced heart attack.)

Trump was viewed as more moderate than the Republican Party & closer to voters; Clinton was viewed as a typical (~liberal-ish) Democrat

Expression of liberal values may require less instinctual responses more subject to social desirability bias, associated with more ambivalence, & less apt to be highlighted in times of crisis

Asian Americans are socialized into supporting Democrats because they settle in liberal metro areas, especially if socially integrated, despite high incomes, immigration from countries with communist histories, & high Evangelical Identity

. and I are in the New York Times Opinion section today with a piece about ideological inconsistency through the lens of our Twitter bot, . Only 23% of people hold entirely liberal/conservative beliefs across 7 policy areas:

The Democratic Party has attracted a growing share of money from small dollar donors; they are more demographically representative but share similar ideological extremism as large donors. female & extreme candidates are benefitting

In case you missed it from earlier: & I wrote about our Twitter bot in . Only about 1 in 4 Americans have perfectly consistent left-right views across 7 major policies. We think our bot brings these ideological idiosyncrasies to life.

If you were to look back since 1980, you could imagine the polling average in Iowa at this point to have an MoE around each top 4 candidate of like +/- 15 to 16. (Some might say that's underselling it.) That's nuts & gives you an understanding of how crazy this could get.

Warren: "I have a very diverse team. & I mean diverse in every meaning of that word. Because I want people who are invested, who come from different experiences, when we sit down at the table to talk about what we can do & where we could make a difference & how we could do it."

Republicans would be much happier had Clinton won. The Senate would be in GOP hands for at least the next decade and the House would not have flipped. Heck Republicans could have gotten to 60 seats in the Senate. Winning the White House in 2016 came with enormous costs.

This is a rather strange claim from Brooks, not least because Obama and for that matter even Kerry and Gore all did fairly well in the Midwest running against the sort of "culture-war conservativism" that he describes.

Some interesting bits from the underlying model: All else being equal (demographics, religion, voting, etc) Ohio is the most pro-Trump state in the union. But the arrangement is weird here; next up is MS, VA and then CA! KS, IN & IL are more anti-Trump than we'd expect.

What is the best deep dive or behind-the-scenes tictoc on how the tobacco age was raised to 21 with no public discussion in the midst of high polarization? It likely holds important lessons for how lowering the volume helps pass policy & the evolving role of evidence & advocacy.
