Good morning, Lovelies! I have nerves for my game tomorrow that are sending me into over-planning land. What's the best last minute thing you've ended up with when planning like this?

Anymore what i do is follow the lazy dungeon master's advice and have 3 broad plot threads for the players to follow, and populate the world with fun npcs who have connections to each other & improv it from there. Youll go nuts working on a detailed plot thread if they dont bite

This in particular is a one-shot, so excessive plot threads would be an issue. I just need extra stuff in case they burn through the mystery investigation more quickly than I expect.

You can always have them find a deck of many things. Once, when the mission i planned fizzled i had an npc show up wanting to play cards. It was a cursed deck & he had to draw all the cards in a week or he'd die, so he tried to trick the pc's into playing poker & drawing cards

Turned into quite the tense situation as they all sat around a campfire drawing cards and dealing with the results. Ended up being incredibly fun, and as it was a oneshot as well everyone dove in enthusiastically
