Anyone who still believes in a "mistake theory" view of the left where the left gets triggered by questionably offensive actions of non-progressives is ngmi They are offended that non-progressives are allowed to live and will take offense at any way they signal non-progressivismpic.twitter.com/iSmfdLcrje

      What is “mistake theory”?

It's a Scott Alexander-ism - "mistake theory" is the idea that bad outcomes are the result of mistakes or trade-offs that can't be avoided. "Conflict theory" the idea that costs are intentionally imposed on the out-group for the benefit of the in-group. Slightly different here

Here's it's "mistake" as a group has some values that the other group doesn't value as much and so there's anger because the out-group doesn't respect the same values vs "Conflict" where a group picks its values so as to be offended by *anything* the other group does

Here’s a problem with “Theory,” because it’s incredibly, ridiculously easy to explain what’s going on with common sense and normal terminology. The left don’t like “Let’s Go Brandon” because it’s funny and effective and goes against a guy with whom they’re stuck.

Which is what I'm saying - they don't dislike it because they have some kind of norm about euphemized swearing about the Sacred Office of the President (mistake) - they don't like it because it opposes them (conflict). There's no way to express that dislike that they'd accept

This is a very clear case of an absence of “norms.” Because a year ago they were openly saying “Fuck Trump” everywhere. “Let’s go Brandon” is objectively not as vulgar or offensive. But they treat it like it is. Why? It’s not them saying it.
