I don't disagree with you, but I doubt this was controlled for other demographics One reason that I could take "Coming Apart" by Charles Murray seriously is that it removed that potential factor entirely

Not needed to control for demographics because societal decline goes both ways - a declining society with a hostile elite will - out of envy and spite - interfere with reproduction of better members while also importing clients to outvote the people they hate.

I think the real problem is the breakdown of a coherent society. Less likely to lie about lying if there's no perceived or otherwise repercussions from it.
