Between the 1970s and 1990s, the share of sequels in Hollywood didn't change. Since 1999, it's basically been more sequels, remakes, and adaptations every year. WHAT HAPPENED IN 1999?pic.twitter.com/498jY4XI1x

Other than "Godfather II," 20th Century movie sequels were typically cheesy, bad, and often held in contempt by the people who worked on them. 21st Century sequels have higher quality control. On average, they really are better movies than earlier sequels.

Marvel movies wouldn't have been feasible in the 20th century. 20+ good enough movies in a decade would've exhausted production crews. One reason why Return of the Jedi and Temple of Doom were so uneven was that Lucas and Spielberg were emotionally exhausted from prior efforts.

But you'd think otherwise dictatorial pre-auteur Golden Age movie studios would have ruthlessly organized sequels, moving talent around to keep them fresh. They had Victor Fleming direct part of both Gone With Wind and Wizard of Oz in 1939. From 2021's perspective, it's curious.

That might explain how serials like Flash Gordon worked. Lucas & Spielberg tried to replicate them as auteurs, but it proved too exhausting. Marvel perfected the formula with two hour run times and top shelf acting talent.

Massively underrated factor here is script writing software plugins for word processors. Play two Marvel movies side by side and they'll hit the same beats at near the same time. Harder to write an original movie than to basically shuffle plot elements into pre-defined slots

40% of MCU movies have the same basic plot as Spider-Man 2002 (someone gains powers, must learn how to use them, and fight someone who is an evil reflection of what they've gained). Another 30% have the same plot as Spider-Man 2 (hero must learn to live w/ consequences of power).

Another 20% take the basic plot structure from Spider-Man 3 (heroes are thrown into a cage match with an assortment of villains). Guardians of the Galaxy 1&2 are different but that's essentially a 20th century movie trilogy.
