Any actual answer to this question leads to the inevitable conclusion that the entire system needs to be destroyed and everyone running it permanently retired so no one will consider the question until someone invents an alternative that comes up with a different conclusion

If you keep digging you'll discover *there was no good reason* for doing this - just that there's a line item for "pandemic prevention" that no one would dare cut because Fauci would talk to someone at NYT and they would run a story about "cutting protection from pandemics"

That alone indicts the entire system. System doing dangerously stupid things because no one can make a decision to stop doing so because everyone in the system is hostage to media reporting that looks purely for a gotcha like that. No one in media can stop it either.

If some editor didn't want to push that story, some other editor would - and the second editor would *also* have a story about how the first editor was pressured out of reporting on it - probably at the behest of some approved villain*. *(R)s, pharma company, etc.
