This thing is a little bit reddit at times but I think that can be forgiven, knowing what I now do about the author. A gripping read from start to finish. And grim https://elan.school/

still can't quite tell if the protagonist is nonfiction but really might as well be, there's even a link to a youtube of one of the program's founders talking about the boxing matchespic.twitter.com/LfuNFK1z0e

There are parts of the story that feel like they were embellished to make a good narrative. The pacing and some of the little turns. The place is real but the character.. who knows

There were touches needed to set the reader up to invest - first thing he does when he arrives is try to fight - so the reader can't dismiss it with "oh, *I* wouldn't meekly accept being taken that way" He definitely dramatized and personalized all obvious but impossible escapes

I write that and seconds later get to this part. He knows the barrier he has in communicating with people - makes me think this is his story.pic.twitter.com/Q64u8aNIbw

Adam Egat (norm's sidekick) got sent to a similar Synanon spinoffhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAv3p5vv5cs …

Interesting that Adam mentions many things that are similar - either convergent memetic evolution, conscious modeling of these groups on each other or these are splinter groups from people who were on staff at the others.
