There are certainly those who believe what you describe, but history has examples of biological solutions (reconquista, Constantinople, founding of modern Israel). Buying time is a perfectly viable solution, especially when threats are weakening themselves.

Progressives didn't become Shakers until the late 60s - that at least implies a chance for things to be different. On the other side of the ledger, they've been Shakers since ... the late 60s.
