New Dune movie raised an interesting implied question with its costume design. The movie lays out the rules of personal shields in the Dune-iverse - slow blade goes through, fast deflected. It also shows soldiers in heavy armor. How do you penetrate armor with a slow blade?

Yes, can't use shields in the desert of Arrakis but that's a place almost no one visits other than the Harkkonens - the rest of the armies in the Imperium should have been using armor to supplement their shields - they seem to be a perfect match

Yeah, seems like you could knock someone over with a projectile weapon that fires heavy projectiles then stab him when he's down. Actually lots of alternative ways to kill someone with a shield - how do you think shields would do against flamethrowers if the liquid stuck?

Paintballs filled with caustic, poisonous, or flammable material, buried in a landslide (real or manmade in the form of dumping gravel on someone) all seem like ways to defeat a shield. Gas slowed enough to block the effects long enough to react - was considered in the novel.

Head is a small target to rely on hitting with projectile weapons
