It would be great for baseball if you could clone Whit Merrifield and have a couple of those guys on every team.

Baseball peaked in the 1970s-80s when we had the widest diversity of talents on each team, unlike today when practically everybody in the starting line-up is expected to hit at least 20 homers per season.

That's the strategically optimal approach to baseball so that's what better run teams want. The players on all teams want to optimize their performance on the metrics that top teams pay for because they have to keep in mind the market on their next contract.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game" - if you don't like that that's optimal way to win baseball games, change the rules of baseball but "build winning baseball teams" is the job of a lot of men who will do that job.
