Wikipedia is a part of this cycle. The wikipedia "reliable source" rule there means as long as someone can publish a story in an official publication, it goes into wikipedia which then gets used as a source by others.

I think it's actually even worse than "If another journalist reported it and it fits the narrative, then it must be true"; it's "...then if I don't publish it too, I'll get fired and replaced by someone who will". They're not even thinking about truth a little bit.
