To make a market work you need both a discourse of price and a discourse of quality. If discourse of price is missing (healthcare), prices get out of control. If discourse of quality is missing (food, many consumer goods), you get race to the bottom commodity trash.

They can (and do) tolerate a certain amount of reputational harm. They are pretty good at walling off weirdos like us from the great mass of people who have neither the time nor the ability to get to the bottom of their manipulative practices.

Why do you think LG has over fifty models of 4K television of the same size? With confusingly similar model numbers? Some of which are made specifically to be sold on special dates like Black Friday? I didn't know that last part until this week btw – it's a years old practice.
