The surface story of communism is a lie - it's not about "the workers" - it's a movement for the dissatisfied intellectual elites who are envious of the productive elite with "the workers" as the excuse so of course the support for communism is going to come from that class.

There's no bottom to resentment and envy - Mensheviks thought they were using the Bolsheviks. Who knows what grudges the guy was carrying - he certainly either was very stupid or consumed with hatred to inflict economic ruin on the country he ruled for a dozen years.
