I think the Fukuyamian/Hegelian take on it ultimately holds up. The point isn't that the French Revolution perfectly reflected liberal ideals (although at its fever pitch it often did), it's that the French Revolution *revealed* those perfect, gnostic ideals of liberalism
to a world that had been ignorant of them. Therefore, once revealed, those liberal ideals, no matter how imperfectly implemented they might be at first, would necessarily overtime become more perfect, because logically if liberal ideals are deemed "higher" than the old ideals
