Wrote a new piece in english mostly as an aid in trying to gather and organize my own thoughts as to what's going on with Afghanistan and what it will mean going forward. Might have some flaws but I think Schmitt is the right direction to start in.https://tinkzorg.wordpress.com/2021/08/16/farewell-to-bourgeois-kings/ …

Excellent piece but I think "all claims to rulership are metaphysical" is pushing it. What metaphysical claims to authority are made by, say, the CCP, that Chinese ppl take seriously? Besides 'we'll make you comfortable and prosperous and keep China safe from its enemies'?

The CCP are de facto claiming to be the inheritors to the old chinese imperial tradition (though probably not the Qing, given the ethnic and historical dimension there lol). This isn't some sort of hidden subtext, their entire pitch today is national revanchism!

I doubt that's true. If they believed so then why haven't they jumped at the chance to revive Confucianism as a legitimating narrative (something many conservative Chinese intellectuals have been advocating for quite a while)?

Instead they still claim to be socialists and Xi makes an explicit point of justifying the stuff he does to restore Chinese glory in terms of socialist doctrine.

I don't care to argue this point, because it is irrelevant even if you were to be right (which you are not). Even if we accept your claim that the CCP have no legitimating claim and rely on mere utility, that is exactly the point Schmitt is making about kings turning "bourgeois".

All legitimating claims for ruling elites are metaphysical, because non-metaphysical claims are the means of last resort for an elite that has *lost* its claim to rule. I am not sure the CCP qualify for that distinction, but even if they do, it doesn't change the argument.

I'm afraid I just don't understand the point of this, both theoretically and also in a personal sense. If some guy, my patron, pledged to pay me off or keep me safe or uphold the moral order effectively, why wouldn't I support his bid for power? What's the point of the voodoo?

Think of it this way - men have died for their Kings and their nations. Dying for your King or your country can never directly benefit the person doing it, yet men have done it. When you can understand *that* reasoning, you'll understand what a metaphysical claim to rule is.

There's nothing 'metaphysical' about putting the good of the group above that of the individual. You just have to identify with the group and its project.
