Both mental shortcuts rely on social proof instead of real world data as evidence of truth. They just work in opposite directions.

Nah, we've seen heterodox but garbage tier stuff come routinely out of academia since the beginning of the pandemic. There really is no substitute for good judgement, and "opposite day" epistemology – as the dissident right showcases – is a recipe for derangement.

That's not reversal epistemology - it's sensible when there are motivated liars who produce and gatekeep mainstream scholarship.
