You make a strong argument. But people notice the statistical disparities and they look for explanations. Systemic racism is one. Average differences is another. People don't think that Asians/Jews are successful because the government is biased towards them.

Or cultural variation + cumulative effects of historical experience

Those would be classified as "average differences." Put it this way: If we learned that Italian-Americans earned less income and had less wealth than German-Americans, we would not necessarily conclude that this is due to anti-Italian bigotry.

Right, but we also wouldn't conclude that Italian-Americans are less smart or less talented than German-Americans -- just that there are certain distinct features of German-American culture and heritage that are more conducive to higher earnings

Or one group was more positively selected than the other (which might actually be a more testable hypothesis than the just-so ‘culture’ accounts)

I'm not an expert on this. However, 2 points: 1. My understanding of the scientific consensus is that the emergence of "races" is too recent for major cognitive difference to evolve (plus, genetic variation within "races" makes talk of "racial differences" far too crude)

That may well be the "consensus" but it is massively false.pic.twitter.com/u4M9BJUQWP
