There's a story about philanthropy in Africa that I often think about. Mosquito nets were given to a village to help them deal with diseases borne by mosquitoes. But then the local fish population dropped rapidly. This was a huge problem, as fish was a large part of their diet.

My favorite story about African philanthropy was the guy who got a grant for fertilizer for his farm, used it when under supervision, quadrupled his yield - the next year the supervisors leave, he spends all the cash and goes right back to the old yields.

one of the reasons why the experts and African farmers themselves have asked for highly effective pesticides as aid--they can't really be used for anything except boosting agricultural yields ofc the State Department won't allow it bc they're "too toxic"

Would do the same thing anyway - boosts yields for a year, he blows all the cash playing the big man in African fashion then can't afford it next year and the insects get a nice selective bump to be immune to the pesticides. At least fertilizer doesn't have the second part.

so afaik the only people blowing cash from USAID progs are govt officials, at peasant level they either get DDT that yr or they don't. if they're getting cash it's insignificant as total % of aid. US prefers all materiel/no cash but govts can refuse if no poss of bribes/graft

The aid wasn't in the form of cash in the story - in the story the aid was in fertilizer and consulting on how to use it - the cash was from increased yield If you go through this with an Asian peasant the next year he'll ... buy fertilizer with the extra returns - not in Africa

Realistically, some do, some don't, those who do end up owning all the farmland after a while, those who don't have to work the land. Difference between Africa & Asia is latter countries have stronger governments & more consistent foreign investment.

why is this the case? well, Asian countries tend to have historical origins going back thousands of years. they are "real countries" so to speak. African countries are decidedly artificial post-colonial constructs now baked in by global financial-political system
