The sequels were tantalizing in that they did amazingly interesting world-building that created a universe that could have had amazing stories set in it but unfortunately failed to deliver those stories.

Agreed. The sequels get shit on for legit reasons, but I still love them. The Architect scene in Reloaded might be my favorite of the trilogy.

Part of the point of the scene was that the Architect had had that conversation before but Neo was figuring it out on the fly. Rewatching it with the context of the full film gives you the Architect's perspective on it. You can get it both ways.
