The formalities of it seemed to depend on time and class, but there was an element of agency and family participation both. I'd assume most kids met at the fair or another social gathering or were known to each other for a long while and the parents had already talked it out.

Met the wife's parents after the first time meeting for coffee and she knew she wanted to pursue when I was able to talk to her parents properly, hah. Feels an echo of older things. Highly recommended.
