To a good approximation, natural selection does path-limited optimization, also limited by mutational noise. Once understood, which will never happen in your case, male homosexuality is a puzzle. Should be much rarer.

It is correlated with the feminine attributes that contribute to making human beings more successful in life. Some men get too little, some too much. The ones who get too much are gay. We are going to have to agree to disagree.

Indeed. Highly successful societies have made great use of artistic men who haven’t been that interested in the opposite sex. Michelangelo comes to mind. Just like they make use of hyper-aggressive young men to defend them in battle. Individual reproduction loses out both times.

Imagine a gene variant that often gets the carrier dead, but confers some benefit to the tribe. It gets rarer every generation - unless the benefits are large enough and sufficiently concentrated in close relatives that are more likely than average to carry that allele.

Women like "sensitive" men, so the ability to operate well in a social milieu is adaptive for the individual and not just the tribe. Great interpersonal skills also benefit the individual and are on the feminine side of the equation.

The one thing I'll say for his argument is that some (small fraction of) women find gay men attractive because they misread his indifference to her as coming from an abundance of better (female) sexual options.
