That's because war became much more mechanical and somber. Industrialization. WWI was the last war of the "warrior culture" for it changed people's view of war. There is no nobility in dying to a gas attack in a trench.

Well, after WWI and WWII the progressives essentially completely restructured society. Would that happened had those soldiers not died? Had America not participated in either wars, would the result still be the same?

No, because American progressives used American military might to put themselves in charge. American military men worried about external enemies and progressives just worried about having control of the IFF of the military.
