i think the only way to do it is to enjoy the feeling of lifting as much as you are physically capable of- if that doesn't do it for you then yeah do something else

I wonder whether my inability to appreciate weightlifting comes from a (religiously motivated) anti-vanity indoctrination in childhood. I associate being muscly with being vain, and cannot get excited about the possibility.

Not sure I understand the connection between vanity and steak? I had a mostly-standard Christian upbringing, which involves an explicit doctrine about how animals were made for the benefit of humans, and therefore eating them is fine.

Hard to enjoy weight lifting if it threatens a core of your identity - showing that a stance taken out of moralistic preening actually made you inferior on a dimension that's vitally important. Can give up one or the other - one choice involves starting at the bottom.
