Equality of opportunity as the definition of “equality” puts the burden of proof on you to prove it is possible. On impact with reality, there is visibly no such thing. Equality through equity is much more coherent. It’s either equity or abandoning any pretence of equality.https://twitter.com/emeriticus/status/1414057489201573891 …

Conservatives who insist that by embracing equity the left has rejected the equality principle at the heart of postwar America miss that equity is how the left claims it will realize equality. The left understands equality is a political weapon whereas conservatives don't

The "equality of opportunity" people can't even explain why it's a good idea or why it's important because there is no coherent rationale for it. Sometimes they go for "it gets the best results" but it manifestly doesn't. Other times some bizarre moralistic justification - why?

The classical liberal idea of procedural fairness seems to be relatively harmless and works pretty well until faced with large group-based differences in outcome, then tribalism takes over.

Far from harmless. Judgement on who to admit into the elite kept Goodhart's law under control. One generation of low trust, high test score elites broke that and replaced it with manipulating procedural outcomes. Procedural fairness is temporary at best.

Is not any law or custom subject to institutional capture? A corrupt elite can subvert the system in so many different ways. Not sure what is special about procedural fairness vs gender nonsense for instance….

…now if you want to argue that the preoccupation with fairness will be our demise I totally agree. But how do you do that?
