Dumping on PUAs because of what they note empirically works to get women attracted is a bad sign for the speaker. PUAs don't advocate "no dinner dates" out of woman-hatred - they advocate it because if a man's goal is to get a woman attracted to him, dinner dates work against it https://twitter.com/clawsonsmithy/status/1411841854958493696 …

I like the idea of dinner as a first date, but I also sense that it comes off pretty needy or overinvested in practice. Thought it was a cultural difference at first. I hate the cold transactional nature of it all, but you become more pragmatic as you age.

Signalling is real and always on - as a person you have to be mindful of the signals you're sending. People weight signals more heavily because they're harder to fake.

In particular, when agents have an incentive to fake, it's the only way to communicate at allhttps://www.lesswrong.com/posts/ybG3WWLdxeTTL3Gpd/communication-requires-common-interests-or-differential …

Interesting example - misquoting Wittegenstein in that specific way sends such a strong signal that the writer is a mind-killed progressive that I'm strongly disinclined to bother reading it and only do so because the author known to me.

Some of the damage from being a mind-killed progressive in 2007 is permanent (okay, all of my factual beliefs about how the world actually works were totally wrong, but you can't take away the æsthetic!!)

If you can abstract at the right level that damage serves as a nice early warning system for dangerous thought.
