It's not really a filter though - except as a filter against women who are not at all attracted to the man but are enticed by the prospect of a nice meal (and even more so than that - the prospect that her feminine charms won her that meal).

An expensive dinner date generates *negative* attraction by what it expresses - that this man has to work hard to impress this woman (eiw, needy), that he needs a crutch of spending vs charming personality (eiw, sucker), that he thinks of himself as buying affection, etc.
