Every fighting sport has weight classes yet men vary in height and weight. The implications are very clear - unarmed combat is relatively unimportant as a selective pressure on men and size isn't the most important factor in soldiering (like it is in unarmed combat).https://twitter.com/CyberPunkCortes/status/1410301887061057541 …

How big does a person need to be to be an effective soldier? Audie Murphy was a one man army at 5’5” and no more than 140 lbs. The average Civil War soldier was no more than 5’7” and 145 lbs. They could march dozens of miles carrying 1/3 their body weight in gear. pic.twitter.com/s8terDuFfS

thoughts: 1. modern warfare does not produce eugenic selection pressure - it is extremely dysgenic because causalities are distributed more or less at random 2. variations in height and weight would have had much more effect in outcomes for pre-modern combat with hand weapons

(to expand on point 1, modern warfare has dysgenic effect because conscripted soldiers are selected from the most fit cohort of male population, they're removed from reproduction pool for years even if they survive, and some random distribution of them are maimed or killed)

could possibly make an argument for post-sedentary agricultural mass warfare creating some kind of selection pressure for "obedience/agreeableness" or similar traits - e.g. greek style phalanx warfare tended to produce remarkably low casualties unless the formation broke

but once ranged weapons become the norm, particularly artillery, I think any kind of positive selection pressure driven by warfare is no longer a thing

Calling in the correct coordinates on an artillery strike is a high stakes IQ test

sure, but what's the selection pressure there - "make sure you pick a 2nd lieutenant that can read a map so he doesn't accidentally drop a bunch of mortar rounds on your position"? it's an IQ test for one member of the squad, but for the majority it's a purely random filter

It's not the only IQ loaded task in industrial warfare - tank crews are more effective when they're higher IQ so much so that low IQ crews simply can't hit targets when moving and higher IQ crews can. Industrial warfare is a blip in time though.

granted industrial warfare is a relatively recent development, but the minimum window for observing measurable microevolutionary changes trends ever downward in modern research plus of course the examples in 1st quoted tweet were all framed in terms of modern industrial warfare

e.g. Audie Murphy could be an effective soldier at 4-5 inches shorter than average for his unit in an industrial warfare context, but if he was fighting in a phalanx that would be a crippling disadvantage no matter how individually tough and skilled he was
