Since it's pile on Noah Smith day, it's quite amazing how he simply cannot see any reason for 'holding' a belief beside that of favoring the political implications of said belief.https://noahpinion.substack.com/p/a-response-to-scott-alexander-on …

Replying to @Outsideness
By the way, what do people make of Ron Unz’s argument from a while back that Jews are extremely overrepresented at elite colleges (relative to their ability), while white gentiles are the most discriminated against? https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/the-myth-of-american-meritocracy/ …pic.twitter.com/HgW2sN8rVW

Short: Unz is a crazy person who also doesn't mind lying. Long: He uses different methods to count incoming class ethnicity and phi beta kappa status; the former overcounts incoming class Jews, the latter undercounts. Gelman attempted to replicate and got radically lower numbers.

NB: I do think there is Jewish overrepresentation in higher ed, but it is massively less than what Unz calculates. Maybe ethnocentric nepotism, maybe liberal capture.

It's both - secular leftist Jews have their particular brand of secular leftism as their religion and don't trust non-Jews to actually believe in it as wholeheartedly as they do.
