Hemingway, with his masculine taciturnity, was part of the huge modernist reaction in the 1920s against feminine tendencies in literature that had helped make fiction verbose in the 19th Century.
Amazes me that the mere mention of his name STILL sets women off. You'd expect Henry Miller or Bukowski would do it, but no... Hem is the devil to white bourgeois women.
Feminism peaked in 1919 with Suffrage and Prohibition. But Prohibition was a disaster and turned most bohemian artists against feminism. Hemingway symbolized the turn away from feminine gentility toward the masculine in culture.
Feminism peaked in 1919? Really doesn't look that way to me. By what measure?
19th amendment. Downhill since.
So women get the power to vote, candidates are more and more to their tastes, women occupy more and more powerful positions and the peak of feminism was when that *began*? Really?
