Previously the corps had pretty good defenses against this - the constraint of needing to make profit - and if management lost sight of that then loss of market share and ultimately control of the corporate assets resulted. Since 2008 that hasn't been a concern.

The USSR had a giant red "in case of emergency, break glass" button they could push - surrender to the west. The US does not. The great (part 2) Yarvin / Anton podcast discussion covered this very well.
