This is actually quite clever - whatever group of feds pulled off the hack in the first place doesn't have to worry about the BTC addresses being watched - simply have it sent to coinbase to be "seized".https://twitter.com/JordanSchachtel/status/1401996717394960389 …

More info from the warrant here. So it looks like I was right. The FBI did not obtain the private keys. Instead, they took legal action against an exchange or some kind of custodial wallet that has servers in N California (Coinbase, lol?). These "hackers" were grossly incompetent pic.twitter.com/27YN3FMJUM

It was weird when they demanded the funds in Bitcoin instead of Monero this whole think smells wrong

There are reasons to demand BTC but demanding BTC delivered to Coinbase isn't plausible.

This whole thing seems strange. The FBI has jurisdiction over crimes like this. They can demand Coinbase freeze stolen funds, so why wouldn't have this ransomware group not have been caught by now with such practices?

I don’t know if it was actually coin base that’s just the guy speculating, it was on a server farm in SoCal

If it's on a server farm it's some kind of custodial relationship. BTC isn't held anywhere, it's a public ledger and you can't control the contents of an address without the private key for that address. A custodian, on the other hand, does have servers.

Yeah but eveveryones assuming it was coinbase when we actually don’t know I don’t think. Either way it’s retarded and I don’t buy that Russian elite haxxors didn’t know not to store it on a controlled address

There's no such thing as a controlled address. There are addresses where the secret holder is known and is under control - which is a very real difference.

Sure, but what it means is that even if it's not Coinbase specifically it's some other regulated dealer.
