i ask for a more nuanced view - it's a fatal *failure mode* of enlightement: where rationalism fails in the face of a group of people being instinctively sheltered, and thus living in a world of many *reversals* of natural rules.

The fanatics didn't win because of flaws in human rationality but because of flaws in the structure of academia. They rigged the marketplace of ideas because they couldn't win fairly.
-
They didn't rig anything - they just have different epistemology - "friend / enemy" and "never disagree with anyone who more truly speaks for the progressive egregore". The Enlightenment asserts that epistemology is universal and involuntary when it is neither.

"Nooooooo, you can't just be a hypocrite and not apply the same rules of conduct! This isn't how you logically win in the marketplace of ideas!!!!!" "Hahahaha. Friend-enemy distinction go brrrrrrrr"pic.twitter.com/LpLVccEmTl

The natural progression from that idea is that we go back to tribalist nations that shun all foreigners to the point of near hostility which is based but seemingly impossible in today's world due to a multitude of things short of divine intervention there's no going back now
