Sean McMeekin’s book on The Russian Revolution showed how “War Communism” failed so miserably that Lenin & the Reds had to abandon it by the end of the Russian Civil War. If only the White & other anti-communist forces were more competent & less divided the USSR wouldn’t exist.

Covfefe has mentioned that communism suffers from the “principle-agent” problem. Soviet communism failed the 15 republics & people of them either by being a bureaucratic mess at best or just tons of death to populations, environments in work camps, famines & executions.

Besides profit, I'm sure the engineer-merchants felt bad for the factories and the equipment suffering in the hands of barbarians, just as a peasant would feel bad seeing a horse being ridden down to destruction.
