Read the Yarvin piece - any route to power that can be achieved by an AI is blocked by the state. The thought experiment of a pure economic paperclip maximizer is blocked by simple economics - it will run out of money. A Von Neumann machine is blocked as well.
If it couldn't stop a coronavirus, how is it going to stop a von Neumann machine?
That's not a bad point. Of course, it created the coronavirus in the first place and was quite happy with the results, so there's that too but it does seem to be slipping (to say the least) in its core functions.
