One is consensual the other is hidden.

This is one of the scenarios where we'd disagree on the relevance of consent.

That is literally what makes the difference between the two though. One is an agreement between the couple to allow others to be part of their sex life. The other is going behind your partners back to have sex with others. There is a difference

There is - "polygamy" is worse - it's ugly women getting a thrill out of making desperate men suffer then on top of that, they extract the "this is all consensual, right?" out of the poor saps. Guy is forced to be complicit in his own humiliation.

Also works in reverse. Girl desperate to keep her guy agrees to 'poly' to keep him around. Neither situation seems stable, or good.

No, it doesn't work in reverse - women genuinely don't mind sharing a man and a significant share of them prefer it. Consequence of this being our evolutionary background.pic.twitter.com/FUWtAumAAW

Unless you're the Emperor of China or the Ottomans, or a newly wealthy Conquistador in Latin/South America, this was not a reality for many, MANY people.

Look at the time frames there - Emperor of China / Ottoman Sultan are both *way* after that period - stand out as exceptions.

Ignore the time and look at the circumstances of why such things would happen. Extremely Powerful and wealthy men with concubines. Conquest of large areas of land + massive die off of conquered male population. The factors that cause this to happen outweigh the time period.

Too much presentism in that view. Every state for the last few thousand years has been a Darwinian survivor of a massive tournament. Before that, there were weakly governed areas where a band of men could conquer and the whole band could take multiple wives.

Smaller fighting forces needed, less organization, less top heavy in the critical skills meant that large numbers of men shared the spoils. Of course, organizations that are vulnerable to this disappeared over time.

I don't want this to ever come back. Not in any way, shape or form. Even if that's not what you're advocating, I don't want any of this, or the "ideas" regarding breeding and mating of that far flung period to ever come back.
