Because they routinely cost themselves money and do things that show that they're not motivated to maximize the present value of the future income streams of the assets they manage. If they did then they'd manage them well.

There's always a group of them who manage to seize power at the highest levels and they and all their friends live high on the hog while the proles starve. It's good work if you can start a revolution to get it.

Sure, but that's relative "living high on the hog" - like being a Soviet official who doesn't have to wait in line at the grocery story. "If I impoverish everyone completely and me mostly, my status goes up" isn't "doing it for the money".
