I honestly don't understand why we have the terms "Type I Error" and "Type II Error" when "False Positive" and "False Negative" have fewer words, the same number of syllables, and clear plain-language meanings.

Aren't Type I, II errors about hypothesis testing using a sample, whereas False positive/negative are about the misclassification of individual observations?

Strictly speaking, perhaps, but people use Type I / II in the latter context all the time. And they still mean the same thing and only one of them requires that I memorize more stuff.

Easy way to remember (but yeah, it's an annoying midwit affectation to use the terms casually)pic.twitter.com/S7Qtu6moXe
